Continued from Part IV (guys this is the first draft, so kindly, bear with me if something off catches your eyes.)
The only question which remained was “How do we break the curse?”
“I don’t know how exactly, but the katana is the key to our problem. According to the sage, this katana is the only way to our freedom, if we can figure it out. As this katana presents itself only to the ones who has the purity of true love and a strong will to wield it.”
“Interesting!” I picked up the katana and examined it closely; the dragon eyes on it were still shining bright red but the intensity had decreased and a small inscription, in Japanese, on its long body, was now visible. “Read this, what does it mean?”
She took the katana in her hand while I waited. It was taking more time than I had imagined. “What does it say?”
“Wait, the lines are changing very fast; it seems there are multiple sentences. Like a riddle… get me something to write it on.”
When she was done the paper read:
“Touch the imprints of the holy hand
And wait for the light and dark to be one,
Tie the knot, without any strand,
Only then you shall have your freedom.”
“Are you sure this is all it says?”
“Yes, that’s all.”
I read the riddle, it seemed easy at the first instance and I found my confidence growing. But when I really thought about what it meant, what were the instructions that it was supposed to provide, my confidence wavered quickly and my heart sank. The English was easy but to decipher correctly what it wanted us do seemed a daunting challenge.
I looked up to her, she was busy reading the lines and the thinking lines on her forehead confirmed her state of deep thinking. After some moments her eyes found mine and all I could see was fear, fear of losing me. I realised I was the luckiest man alive on this planet because for some strange reason her heart belonged to me. It was all it took to find the courage and confidence again. All I wanted was to make her the happiest girl and I would do anything; go to any lengths to make that happen.
I kissed her forehead, pouring all the love and care that I held for her in those few seconds till those worry lines disappeared and I felt her relax in my embrace. I took her delicate face in my hands and held her gaze with mine and whispered, “Don’t worry, Fire, I have got this; nothing will go wrong tonight.”
I saw what I was looking for. She graced her beautiful face with the slightest of smile and I found the strength that I needed. Focusing at riddle, I read it again.
“Okay, so… the first sentence seems straight forward. I think it means the imprints of hands on the Katana’s handle. What you think?”
“…yeah, you are right. I think that we both have to touch the respective imprints together. But then what about the second line, when do the light and dark become one, I don’t get it.”
“Don’t stress, we will do it step by step. Come here, let’s try this.” I handed over the katana to her, held her shoulders from behind while planting a soft kiss on her shoulder blade and pulled her towards me with her back facing my front.
Her breathing pattern had changed. I loved the effect I had on her, as she had on me. “Put your hand on the imprint, love”, I whispered softly in her ears
“I know what you are doing, Reo, I invented that trick. But I am not complaining either. Let’s get this over with then I will show you what teasing really is.”
“Oooh! I like the sound of that or should I be afraid?” I tried to lighten the mood then placed my hand on the handle too.
I should have been focused on the katana in my hand, right now, but I was too much aware of her small slender frame in my arms. I loved how her soft curls felt against my arms and how perfectly she fitted into my embrace, as if, it was carved for her. All I could think was how heavenly she smelled and instinctively, my lips found the crook of her neck, inhaling her sweet aroma while planting soft kisses on her jawline.
A sharp nudge in my ribs brought me back to the present where the katana in our hands was glowing bright red with and the handle was getting hotter every second until it became impossible to hold it without burning our hands. It fell to the ground with a bang.
“Reo, you can’t lose focus like that. You saw what happened.”
“You are right but you can’t blame me for it, but I’ll keep my distance from now on to avoid any more mistakes. Did anything else happen while I was…umm… distracted, aside from the katana getting heated up?”
“The second line of the riddle popped up as a warning, it flashed red before the whole katana went red. Probably, we did it wrong.”
She slumped back on the bed with a heavy sigh. I read it again and was sure that it was the only solution to it. We had to try again, we can’t give up now. I looked at the clock and realised that all we had were roughly 90 minutes before the dawn, the arrival of sun which would seal our fate.
“Come on, Fire, get up. We don’t have much time, we need to try again”, I said picking up the katana; thankfully it was stone cold. Strange.
We repeated the procedure again and again and again, only to have the same outcome over and over again. The katana would get too hot every time and drop from our hands. Almost an hour had passed and we were losing all hope with every passing second.
The sky outside the window had already lightened a bit, reminding us of our impending doom. We only had until dawn. 20 more minutes, before the fateful sunrise.
Hi people, this is the next part of my on going story Fire. It was supposed to be the conclusion but it was getting too long therefore, I had to break it up into two parts. I will post the next installment soon. Hopefully, you will like it. Don’t forget to tell me your views and please take all the necessary precautions to stay safe in this pandemic.
