E-Eggnog (26 X 26)

continued from D-Decoration (26 X 26)

“I wanted to be human because I wanted to have a life of my own; to be able to do something with my free will which was special to me and could contribute to making a world a better place, even by a slight chance, was very tempting. I wanted to build a small life, nothing fancy, I tell you, but filled with warmth and love.”… “I thought of finding love, having children, a respectable living doing something I enjoyed… sitting in the lap of nature, sipping eggnog by the fire.”

“That is very domestic of you; I am surprised to hear this coming from you. I thought being an angel must have elevated you or something.”

“Haaha! You know that is the problem with your kind, you take these things for granted and roam around in search of God knows what and then complain that all the time that you are unhappy. Believe me, if you really wanted to be happy, compassion and love is the only way. And being an angel doesn’t changes that.”

“Hmm…so, why don’t you start living? All those things that you mentioned can still be found.”

“Are you serious? Human society doesn’t allow you to make a decent living doing what you love, they always have a habit of complexing even the most simplest of things and on top of that there is so much of hierarchy in every single domain- there are first world countries, second world and if you end up in the third world, god can only help you; then there is color of skin which needs to be just perfect including the race, religion, caste, class in which you are born into and believe me, if you fuck even a single level you are bound to face endless shit in some way or the other… And wait… it doesn’t end there, you have to be of the right gender with the right sex and political views; you have to weigh correctly and should have a prescribed length of your body along with a perfect golden ratio of your face; the eyes have to be the right color with the perfectly aligned teeth and with the highest IQ available. And let’s say, you get all these things right, shit doesn’t end there at all. It is only the beginning! There are all sort of crimes – rapes; murders; acid attacks; organ smuggling…don’t even get me started on the list, god knows what have you guys done to the beautiful blue-green planet. It is neither green nor blue, now. So, thanks, but no, thanks; I don’t want to get my paws dirty in your shit”

“Whoah! That was some rant there, man! You are such a pessimist. You, clearly, don’t get it, do you?”

“I don’t get what?”

“That this is what we call LIFE! You can’t just stop doing your thing just because the world is throwing shit around like confetti. Instead you get up, dust it off and do your thing.”… “If you are waiting for a Utopian world then I think being an angel suits you!”

“You have given me my reason! And since I have made up my mind, I think I should leave, now. Drop by, if you ever decide to find out what eggnog tastes like.”

…months later, on the Christmas Eve…

“I knew I would find you here.”

“Wow! Are you really standing here or I am completely drunk?”… “God, I can’t believe you actually showed up; what changed your mind…my perfect last line? It was good, wasn’t it?”

“You still make pathetic jokes, by the way, that hasn’t changed. Is this how this bar usually looks, without Bells decorations?”

“Ha! Yes, but I sort of miss her version; it would be perfect for this evening. So, what do you have in mind, how do you want to start ‘living’?”

“I was thinking to start with the fun part, by finding the love of my life.”

“Hahaahaa! Welcome aboard, you’ll fit right in, man. Cheers!”

Note: Twenty Words Tuesday is paused for this month! I’ll gather the round up for it’s next edition in the New Year.

Hi friends! So, it is finished, tell me if you liked the ending or not. I wrote around 420 words in the 26 minutes for the challenge but decided to extend it (in purple color), to complete the story, which means I’ll start a new one from tomorrow. Please, bear with all the mistakes (grammatical/typos), if any, I did the best I could.

Also, don’t forget to check out previous post’s comment section to read different takes on the prompt!

  1. I love both of Angel’s spiels. I felt the warmth of hope in what life could have and the sting of sadness with the darkness described, but I loved that your Main found that moment to decide that life is what you make of it. It makes me think of one of my favorite quotes, which is is from “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” and it is simply… “42.” Okay, I know that sounds anticlimactic BUT it’s really very powerful because the character that says it is a huge computer whose entire purpose is to find out the meaning of life, the universe, and everything and after 7.5 million years answers, “42,” which seems to make no sense to its creators but it makes perfect sense when you know that the language that computers were first based on was ASCII and when you’re coding in ASCII if you want to make something anything you want it to be you begin your code with an asterisks (*), which in ASCII language is “42”… So the meaning of life, the universe, and everything is “anything you want it to be.”

    1. I am glad to you liked the ending, personally, I wasn’t too happy with it but that’s what happens in just 26 minutes. So, I decided to let it be.
And I am familiar with the ’42’, although I haven’t read the book (I plan to).
Interestingly, there is this one editor/prof who got so much inspired by the ’42’ that he decided to start an anthology in which there will be 42 genres, each showcasing 42 authors with their exactly 42 word story & every story’s title should be of 42 characters. (Luckily, I got my few pieces accepted.)
However, with your explanation about its backdrop, it makes a lot more sense, thanks! It sounds very inspiring, also.

    1. Thank you, Spandana! I am very relieved to know this, as I wasn’t satisfied with the ending but 26 minutes only allow so much.
Thank you, I am grateful for your thoughts. 🙏💙🤗
