O-Ornament (26 X 26)

*New Story*—North & South(Also, a huge thank you to BlueMallowMelt for the prompt)

“He wanted all to lie in an ecstasy of peace; I wanted all to sparkle and dance in a glorious jubilee. I said his heaven would be only half alive; and he said mine would be drunk: I said I should fall asleep in his; and he said he could not breathe in mine.”

Elda had never understood those words more clearly than now.

She held in her hand the most beautiful ring that she could have imagined and it was just a matter of a simple ‘yes’ to be able to wear it; only if were that easy. On any other occasion that ring might just have been an expensive ornament, so easy to say ‘yes’ to; but when presented by a man who wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, it was a different tale.

It wasn’t that she didn’t love Rick, she loved him. He was the love of her life and there have been days in their ten years of dating when her feelings for him could only be described by another quote from the same book.

“If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger.”

And she still felt the same.

But to say yes, meant risking everything she was made of.

And would it be wise or even right to risk all of it when she knew that their happy places would never coincide?

She wasn’t assuming all this or finding excuses. She just knew him in and out. It had been 9 years since their first kiss and yet, her lips yearned for the familiar warmth of his. He was the only one who could make her smile in her worst of time and also the only one who could make her cry just as easily.

And yet, they both were so different, poles apart from each in every little aspect.

Her inability to say an immediate ‘yes’ must have hurt him, but he knew her enough to not take it personally. He knew all her weaknesses and her deepest of fears.

She often used to quote to him, Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same; and his is as different as a moonbeam from lightening, or frost from fire.”

She didn’t doubt their love but, only wondered whether their love was going to be enough to bridge all their differences.

(All the quotes in bold are from Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë)

Also written in response to The Saturday Symphony #21 hosted by our dear friend Jude. As the theme was ‘Timeless Literature’ and Wuthering Heights chose the perfect time to infuse me with some much needed inspiration; needless to say I am honored.

Word Count- 417. Please, bear with all the mistakes (grammatical/typos), if any, I did the best I could. Looking forward to hear your thoughts.

    1. Thank you, Lia. Sometimes, it is easier to whip up things and other times like today it wasn’t.

    1. Aww! That is so sweet, dear. Thank you so much. I had only 26 minutes to whip that up, hence the short piece. But I am extremely glad to know that you loved it.
(Belated) Merry Christmas to you too, Jude. Hope you had fun!

  2. No matter how much you are in love or known a person from years, when it comes to that commitment. I guess most, if not everyone, go thru this and start questioning everything, just to ensure that they are making right choice.

As always, well written Akanksha. Those quotes are used aptly. Loved it.

    1. I think so too! Even if people are sure and don’t even want to change their partner marriage is a BIG decision. And no matter how much precautions and calculations you take in making that decision, you don’t really know how the outcome will be.

Thank you so much, dear! I am glad that you enjoyed it.
